better late than never, right?

So I watched this show when it was originally on KidsWB! all those years ago. And though I sketched the two best friends together a few times and read fics, I never actually contributed anything to the fandom.

So here I am, contributing.

Pairing: Virgil(Static)/Richie
Rating: PG at the worst (boys hugging and blushing!)

If anyone has ever wanted a scene from a V/R fic sketched out, I'll take requests.

Malchik gay.

One of the ways people tend to "disprove" slash pairings - which, the way I'm using the term, are same-sex pairings that aren't absolute canon in the series/movie of choice. For instance, I don't consider Brian/Justin from "Queer as Folk" a slash pairing, because it actually DOES exist in the series; I'm not sure if this is colloquially agreed upon, so I just wanted to clarify - is to scoff that so-and-so "isn't gay", so that is that. Which is lame in and of itself because sexuality exists along a spectrum, blah blah preferences blah you don't have to read it blah fuck blah. Yeah.

But anyway. Since I'm jonesing on Static Shock a lot right now, and one of its popular slash pairings, specifically, I've been doing a lot of Google searches. For me, what makes Virgil/Richie a very canon-realistic pairing is that Richie's comic book counterpart, Rick, actually IS gay. As in, it is an ONGOING STORY ARC in which Virgil finds out and deals with it and other conflicts that arise because of it. And finally, after a LOT of searching, I stumbled on a website that offers up brief yet helpful summaries of the 45 volumes of comics, as well as the four-part "Rebirth of the Cool" that was released shortly after the original comics went out of syndication.

I posted a more fangirlish (friends-locked) version of this in my personal journal, but I thought it would be potentially interesting here, too. So without further ado: The proof is in the pudding.Collapse )

Obviously, mileage is still gonna vary on this; there's always the argument that the cartoon is only loosely based off the comic books after all. However, Virgil and Richie are a lot closer in the cartoon than they are even in the comics; it's obvious the cartoon was meant to showcase their being a duo, rather than Virgil belonging to a larger group of friends. So while Rick doesn't necessarily equate to Richie in every way, an argument can certainly be made that his homosexuality was meant to carry over, albeit subtly, into the show. Also, Dwayne McDuffie, the creator, says so ("It'll never come up in the show because it's Y-7 but as far as I'm concerned, Richie is gay"), and that's good enough for me.

Feel free to add your own thoughts/perspectives on this, particularly if you've actually read the issues in question!

One zip, then you zapped.

It seemed almost inevitable that I would eventually cave and write "Static Shock" porn. I suppose partial inspiration came from this sketch of Virgil and Richie making out over on DeviantArt, but the rest was wrought purely from my twisted, childhood-raping brain cells. So without further ado.

Summary: Richie makes some alterations to the Zap Caps. Takes place sometime post-"Gear", obviously, and contains light bondage, in case that offends anyone's delicate porn-reading sensibilities or anything. Rated NC-17 to be on the safe side.

( 'Zapped'; Virgil/Richie, 1,584 words. )

Just a little pinch.

I’ve become exceedingly more and more interested in Richie as of late, whom I view as a character in the same vein as Ron Stoppable from “Kim Possible” and Harry from the American animation version of “Darkstalkers”, but slightly cooler and even more endearing somehow. And for some reason, I noticed that he didn’t start wearing The Earring until the beginning of season two, and after I couldn’t stop obsessing over it, I finally just let my brain run with it.

Summary: Richie explores some previously uncharted territory. Takes place sometime between “Tantrum” and “The Big Leagues”. Implied pre-slash; fluff. “Jill” is my character, but other than that, everything belongs to Dwayne McDuffie. Rated PG.

( 'Pierced'; Richie POV; 1,500 words. )

Boys will be boys.

Because I am fated to forever fall in love with nonexistant/deadfandoms, here is a "Static Shock" 'fic. Virgil/Richie, to be precise, because it is the Harry/Ron of Kids WB's Saturday morning line-up.

Summary: Virgil and Richie showcase their mastery of the art of avoidance. Likely the Richie-loves-Virgil-but-Virgil-is-confused motif is a common one, but here's take number four-thousand and thirty-eight on it, just for good measure. 5,325 words; rated PG-13.

( 'That Way'; Virgil/Richie; drama/angst. )

After the Big Bang, nothing is impossible.

I've only recently acquired the entire "Static Shock" series, and a small weekend binge has me deep in the trenches of season two and completely smitten for the Virgil/Richie pairing. Possibly I am late to the party, but I was pleased to see that a community like this existed, and am thrilled to be a part of it.

I'm hardly a new fan of male/male pairings, and so I think anyone already wearing slash-colored lenses knows why "Virichie" is a classic pairing. Best friends, brought even closer together because of a set of special circumstances - namely, Richie being Virgil's initial contact/confidante about his new superhero identity - who already share a complex bond. They're thicker than thieves, know each other better than brothers, etc. I suspect Richie would make the first move - maybe it's the earring - and Virgil would sort through his own issues, at the very least coming to terms with his best friend's coming out, and at best, allowing their relationship to be brought to that Next Level. I am sure mileage on this varies, and I look forward to scoping out fanfiction from people in both(/completely separate) camps.

But! What draws me to the pairing is its canon-believability. I realize, of course, that a lot of slash pairings are based on subtext, and that degrees of believability vary wildly depending on several factors (relationships the characters in question are in; sexual orientations; and so on). Why I say that Virgil/Richie is closer than most Lead Fanon Slash Pairings is due mainly to the open-minded and inquisitive nature of the show itself. A cartoon that doesn't skirt around or sugar-coat issues like racism, homelessness, gun control, etc. would, to me, naturally branch out, so to speak, into confronting an issue like homophobia. And not JUST for Virgil, for that matter; Richie's dad being the gruff, former Army dude that he is probably would consider it a horrid affront to his masculinity.

And in my mind, the already-closer-than-close relationship between Virg and Richie is a well-oiled vehicle for that - it's a pity we won't have a chance to see that. But thanks to communities like this, and the Internet's quick accessability of fellow fen, the "Virichie" relationship can continue to flourish, and I, for one, am just happy to see it.

Edit, 9/5/06 @ 5:00 PM: Okay, I've scoped out the Wikipedia entry for "Static Shock" and links to various excerpts/blurbs from the creator discussing Richie's comic alter-ego, Rick being gay, and also how, regardless of the Y-7 rating, Richie is, in fact homosexual. That is more than a little awesome.
